The soft approach

I like to think that marketing works better when it's done honestly, which is why I'm rarely exuberant and loudmouthed about what's going on at work.

I think it's easier for people to trust my recommendations when they're not given out for everything, and when everything my company produces isn't automatically 100% awesome. So, I hope you trust me when I say that  The Twitter Conference in Los Angeles on September 22-23rd, is looking fantastic. Biz says so himself.

The session grid is now live (and will be updated periodically up to the event) so you can take a quick look at what's being offered, and of course the speakers page lists the people on the podium. It includes names like Biz Stone, Guy Kawasaki, Dr Drew Pinsky, Tony Hawk, Olivia Munn, and iJustine.

The two day conference, including lunch, is only $299 (price expires September 6th), so register now, before seats run out.

See you there!

Cloaking shields

My brother was telling me the other day that research into cloaking shields is moving along quite nicely.

I think it's pretty funny that my future kids could be watching Star Wars thinking:

"what? They could travel faster than light but they can't figure out a cloaking shield?? I can buy one at REI!"

Twitter developer meetup in MV

This place is full, and I'm seeing some pretty cool demos. Good work on the part of Sudha and Perrine!

Quotes of the day

I went to a fight the other night, and a hockey game broke out.

I think one of my life goals is to be included in Google's quotes of the day.

Get Great Gadgets. And Keep Them. - Last Year's Model

We love cool gadgets as much as anybody else. We just want to be thoughtful about the stuff we've bought. Even the most cutting-edge, tech-savvy geeks in the world are choosing to hang on to their phones or their iPods that still work just fine.

Definitely good moral support. I keep going back and forth on whether I want to replace my 1st gen iPhone with the 3GS or just keep the damn thing 'cuz it's still working great.

Jonathan Ive Quote

The thing is, it’s very easy to be different, but very difficult to be better.

And a good thing to keep in mind.

McGinn leading in mayoral returns; Mallahan, Nickels right behind

McGinn was at 26.6 percent, Mallahan at 25.8 percent and Nickels at 25 percent. The top two finishers advance to the November general election.

In the race for Seattle Mayor. Along with many people, I assume, I voted not for Nickels but for who I'd like to see running against him in the general election.

Ironically, this means he probably won't make it to the general election.
